EGA resumes alumina output at Al Taweelah refinery in Abu Dhabi

Production at the site is expected to reach 50% of the plant’s capacity within days.

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has restarted production at its Al Taweelah refinery in Abu Dhabi following a suspension that began in March 2026 after Iranian attacks on Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi.

The company said that production at the site is expected to reach 50% of the plant’s capacity within days.

It aims to have the technical capability to achieve full alumina production by the end of the year.

However, further ramp-up at the Al Taweelah alumina refinery will depend on supply chain factors and the optimisation of its alumina sourcing strategy.

The ramp-up in aluminium production at the neighbouring Al Taweelah smelter is not contingent on a full ramp-up at the refinery.

In 2025, the refinery produced 2.4 million tonnes of alumina, supplying 46% of EGA’s requirements for alumina, the material used as feedstock for smelters.

Production of hydrate, the precursor of alumina, resumed at the facility on 24 June 2026.

EGA CEO Abdulnasser Bin Kalban said: “First alumina production from Al Taweelah alumina refinery is another big milestone in our journey to restore EGA’s Al Taweelah site to its position as one of the most important aluminium production complexes in the world.

“The dedication and agility of the team at Al Taweelah alumina refinery has enabled us to reach this milestone safely and quickly.”

Located adjacent to the Al Taweelah smelter, the refinery delivers alumina to storage and then to the smelter via conveyor belts.

The Al Taweelah alumina refinery began operations in 2019.

In May 2026, EGA signed a high-level agreement with ADNOC Logistics & Services to explore collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing supply chain resilience within the aluminium sector.
