Ouster, a high-resolution lidar sensors and software solutions provider, has entered into a multimillion-dollar agreement with Komatsu, a mining equipment company, to supply its 3D digital lidar sensors for Komatsu's autonomous mining equipment suite.

The deal signifies a shift towards an upgraded autonomy stack, aiming to replace legacy 2D lidar systems with Ouster's 3D lidar technology for superior perception and vehicle functionality. This collaboration is expected to enhance the safety and efficiency of mining operations.

Komatsu's autonomous solutions are designed to help customers worldwide improve productivity and reduce total cost of ownership while promoting a zero-harm environment.

This agreement is a key development in Komatsu's commitment to advancing mining automation and safety.

By incorporating Ouster's state-of-the-art lidar technology, Komatsu is poised to empower its customers to operate with greater efficiency, safety and sustainability.

The strategic partnership with Ouster grants Komatsu advanced access to future products for testing and development, enabling the introduction of equipment with enhanced functionality that delivers added value to customers.

Komatsu's future autonomous offerings will feature a combination of long and short-range OS sensors from Ouster's REV7 series, which are expected to provide improved detection, navigation and collision avoidance capabilities.

Komatsu Automation Innovation technical director Matt Reiland said: “Ouster’s products developed through this partnership can withstand the shock, vibration and temperature constraints while delivering the enhanced range and spatial awareness necessary to operate in harsh mining environments.”

In February 2025, Komatsu and Japan-based tyre company Bridgestone initiated a proof of concept for a collaborative initiative focusing on the development of new solution services for mining customers.
