World’s ten largest coal mines in 2020

Here are the ten largest coal mines by production across the world in 2020, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. North Antelope Rochelle Mine

The North Antelope Rochelle Mine is a surface mine situated in Wyoming, United States. Owned by Peabody Energy, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 59.965 mtpa of coal in 2020. The mine will operate until 2040.

2. Sangatta Mine

Located in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, the Sangatta Mine is owned by Bumi Resources. The surface mine produced an estimated 51.718 mtpa of coal in 2020.

3. Gevra OC Mine

The Gevra OC Mine is a surface mine located in Chhattisgarh, India. Owned by Coal India, the brownfield mine produced an estimated 49 mtpa of coal in 2020. The mine will operate until 2028.

4. Kusmunda OC Mine

Owned by Coal India, the Kusmunda OC Mine is a surface mine situated in Chhattisgarh, India. The greenfield mine produced an estimated 47 mtpa of coal in 2020. The expected mine closure date is 2039.

5. Black Thunder Mine

The Black Thunder Mine is a surface mine situated in Wyoming, United States. Owned by Arch Resources, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 45.53 mtpa of coal in 2020.

6. Bogatyr Komir Mine

The Bogatyr Komir Mine is a surface mine situated in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan. Owned by Samruk-Energy, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 43.338 mtpa of coal in 2020.

7. Tutupan Mine

Located in South Kalimantan, Indonesia, the Tutupan Mine is owned by Adaro Energy. The surface mine produced an estimated 38.663 mtpa of coal in 2020.

8. Daliuta-Huojitu Mine

The Daliuta-Huojitu Mine is an underground mine located in Shaanxi, China. Owned by China Shenhua Energy, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 37.552 mtpa of coal in 2020. The mine will operate until 2055.

9. Northern Shaanxi Mine

Owned by Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group, the Northern Shaanxi Mine is a surface and underground mine situated in Shaanxi, China. The greenfield mine produced an estimated 35.797 mtpa of coal in 2020.

10. Heidaigou Mine

The Heidaigou Mine is a surface mine situated in Inner Mongolia, China. Owned by China Shenhua Energy, the brownfield mine produced an estimated 32.772 mtpa of coal in 2020. The mine is expected to operate until 2030.
