Ten biggest producing surface and underground mines in Europe in 2020

Here are the ten largest surface and underground mining projects by production in Europe in 2020, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Sorgun Lignite Field Mine

The Sorgun Lignite Field Mine is a coal mining project in Yozgat, Turkey. The greenfield project is owned by Karma Madencilik Insaat Sanayi ve Tic.. The mine produced an estimated 6.732Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 5.117 mtpa of coal in 2020.

2. Kvannevann Iron Ore Mine

The Kvannevann Iron Ore Mine is an iron ore mine owned by Leonhard Nilsen & Sonner. Located in Nordland, Norway, the brownfield mine produced approximately 6.717Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 1.447 mtpa of iron ore in 2020. The expected mine closure date is 2023.

3. Jilt Mine

Located in Gorj, Romania, the Jilt Mine is a coal mining project owned by Complexul Energetic Oltenia.

The greenfield mine produced an estimated 5.148Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 3.913 mtpa of coal in the same year.

4. CSA Mine

The CSA Mine is a coal mine located in Moravian-Silesian, Czech Republic. Owned by Czech Coal, the greenfield project produced an estimated 4.482Mt of ROM in 2020.

The mine had an estimated production of 3.406 mtpa of coal in 2020. The CSA Mine will operate until 2022.

5. Tuncbilek Mine

Owned by Turkish Coal Enterprises, the Tuncbilek Mine is a coal mine situated in Kutahya, Turkey.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 3.544Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 2.694 mtpa of coal in 2020.

6. Artvin Murgul Mine

The Artvin Murgul Mine is a copper mining project in Artvin, Turkey. The brownfield project is owned by Cengiz Holding. The mine produced an estimated 2.681Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 50.184 thousand tonnes of copper in 2020.

7. Skouriotissa Mine

The Skouriotissa Mine is a copper mine owned by Hellenic Copper Mines. Located in Nicosia, Cyprus, the brownfield mine produced approximately 2.516Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 4.529 thousand tonnes of copper in 2020.

8. Boliden Area Mines

Located in Vasterbotten, Sweden, the Boliden Area Mines is a gold mining project owned by Boliden. The mine is expected to operate until 2028.

The brownfield mine produced an estimated 2.1Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 104.411 thousand ounces of gold in the same year.

9. Banovici Mine

The Banovici Mine is a coal mine located in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Owned by Government of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the greenfield project produced an estimated 1.477Mt of ROM in 2020.

The mine had an estimated production of 1.186 mtpa of coal in 2020.

10. Kakanj Coal Mine

Owned by JP Elektroprivreda BiH, the Kakanj Coal Mine is a coal mine situated in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 1.36Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 1.038 mtpa of coal in 2020.
