Underwater Waste Disposal

By SRSL

The mining sector is responsible for some of the largest releases of heavy metals into the environment of any industry worldwide.

It also releases air pollutants such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, in addition to leaving behind a legacy of land-based tailings impoundments, which pose the risk of acid drainage and even catastrophic rupture long after the operational lifetime of the mine.

The deep-sea mine tailings placement (DSTP) is an alternative to land-based minewaste disposal and in this article Dr Tracy Shimmield of SRSL discusses it in more detail. To read the article in full, please download it for free here.
