The global mining industry noticed a 0.3% rise in IT hiring activity in August 2021 over the previous month, led by Polyus 11.61% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The mining industry’s overall hiring activity increased 5% when compared with July 2021.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 4.02% share of the global mining industry’s hiring activity in August 2021, up 0.16% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of August 2021 were 16.86% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 25.05% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive mining IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 41.64% emerged as the top IT occupation in the mining hiring activity in August 2021, a 26.87% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 18.13% in August 2021, up 14.29% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 15.86% share in August 2021, a growth of 19.15% over the previous month, and Computer Support Specialists with an 11.05% share in August 2021 and a drop of 35% over July 2021.

Top five mining companies by recruitment activity in August 2021

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 8.63% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global mining industry during August 2021 over July 2021.

Polyus posted 41 IT jobs in August 2021 and registered a rise of 20.59% over the previous month, followed by ThyssenKrupp with 24 jobs and a 54.72% decline. Gold Fields with 24 IT jobs and Evolution Mining with 20 jobs, recorded a 36.84% decline and a 900% rise, respectively, while En++ Group recorded a 50% rise with 18 job postings during August 2021.

Regional composition of IT hiring in mining industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global mining IT hiring activity in August 2021 with a 36.83% share, which marked a 9.24% rise over the previous month.

Asia-Pacific stood next with 33.99%, registering a 20.53% month-on-month decline. Europe was the third leading region with a 26.91% share and a 25.2% drop over July 2021.

In the fourth place was Middle East & Africa with a share of 1.13% and a month-on-month drop of 66.67%. South & Central America stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.13%, registering a 33.33% decrease over the previous month.
