Monadelphous said it has seen deferments on large resources construction projects  as a result of supply chain issues in Australia due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Coronavirus has affected the firm’s engineering construction division given that awards for potential new contracts for construction projects have been deferred. The firm stated it will not offer revenue guidance for this financial year.

The Peruvian government has announced its plans to slowly ease restrictions on important sectors including mining and construction this month. Economic activity has been almost at a halt since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown measures across the country.  Exploitation, storage and transportation of large-scale mining is expected to be restarted. Peru is the second largest producer of copper in the world.

South Africa’s Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) has won a case against the government, which will be compelled to impose stringent guidelines on mining companies to safeguard the health of the mining workers during the Covid-19 pandemic, reported Reuters. Following the court ruling on Friday, South Africa’s AMCU president Joseph Mathunjwa said: “Now the lives and livelihoods of mineworkers can be protected.”

Mopani Copper Mines (MCM), the Zambian subsidiary of Glencore, has announced its plans to restart mining operations for 90 days, but still expects to proceed with its original plan to place its mining operations under care and maintenance. The initial plan to put MCM under care and maintenance has drawn the ire of the Zambian government, which warned of revoking the mining licences as the firm did not serve sufficient notice to the government. Mopani stated that it held constructive talks with the Zambian government.
