Swedish engineering group Sandvik has launched the DD423i, a next-generation automated development drill rig, marking a significant advancement in underground mining technology.

This new model is designed to enhance productivity and reliability, building on the foundation set by the DD422i model.

The DD423i, equipped with new SB75i booms featuring double roll-overs, increases drilling coverage by 34.5% and enhances cross-cut performance by 48%.

It is designed for improved reach in tight areas, such as those in room-and-pillar mining settings.

Automated boom movements and built-in collision avoidance aim to enhance the speed, safety and precision of drilling cycles.

During field tests at Boliden in Sweden's Skellefteå region, the DD423i demonstrated more than 95% machine availability.

The DD423i's cabin redesign enhances operator safety and comfort by offering 55% better visibility, reduced noise and improved dust control.

Its improved serviceability with easier access to essential components allows for quicker maintenance and reduced downtime.

The rig's advanced control system supports intuitive operation, catering to operators of varying skill levels.

The DD423i integrates with Sandvik digital mining solutions, including Sandvik iSURE, DrillConnect, iNav total station navigation, My Sandvik Remote Monitoring and the Newtrax Mining Data Platform, facilitating a connected, data-driven approach to development drilling.

Sandvik development drills product manager Simon Morrissey said: “The introduction of the DD423i is an important milestone for Sandvik.

“The DD422i set the benchmark for development drilling in 2015 and its success over the past decade has shaped the industry.

“With the DD423i, we honour that legacy while delivering a future‑ready drill designed for even higher performance, automation and safety.”

Last month, Sandvik Mining launched My Sandvik Geo, a new cloud-based digital service designed to transform drilling data into practical geological and geotechnical insights.
