Volvo Mining will operate under Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE).
The group stated that the move is aimed at addressing projected growth and transformation in the mining industry.
Volvo CE president Melker Jernberg said: “Mining has been an important part of the Volvo Group for decades, but the industry’s growing significance calls for an even greater level of focus.
“With Volvo Mining as our centre of expertise, we are combining capabilities from across the Group to further enhance customer value in collaboration with our retail partners. This will create new opportunities to strengthen our position in a strategically important and growing segment.”
By unifying expertise and resources for mining customers and their contractors, Volvo Group aims to manage its product and service portfolio for the mining segment on a global scale, as well as coordinate research projects across the wider company.
Initially, the new entity will serve mining companies and contractors in Sweden, Norway and Finland.
According to the company, there are plans for phased expansion into further markets over time.
Mining sites typically demand complex combinations of machinery and vehicles working in challenging and isolated environments.
Volvo Group cited industry trends focusing on boosting productivity, reducing emissions and improving safety as key drivers for the need for more integrated solutions.
Volvo Mining is expected to assist customers in meeting these operational requirements.
Dedicated financial resources will support the new entity as it seeks to enhance its offerings and respond to changing industry needs.
Per-Erik Lindström, presently senior vice-president of Volvo Trucks International, is set to become the head of Volvo Mining when the new entity launches.
