According to the contract, Thiess will continue operations at the QCoal Northern Hub, which comprises the Sonoma, Sonoma North, Drake and Jax mines, for a period of four years.

The company is required to offer services such as mine planning, drilling and blasting, overburden removal and coal mining at the Northern Hub, which is located in the Bowen Basin and produces hard coking and thermal coal.

“We’re proud to continue our work where we have a proven track record of delivering innovative and low-cost mining solutions.”

Cimic Group CEO Michael Wright said: “Thiess has a long-standing partnership with QCoal and the Thiess team has provided expert planning and optimum mine sequencing to deliver consistent outcomes for our client.

“This extension builds on our relationship with QCoal and enables us to drive greater efficiencies at the project.”

Works under the new contract will be delivered starting this month.

Thiess managing director Douglas Thompson said: “We’re proud to continue our work at the QCoal Northern Hub where we have a proven track record of delivering innovative and low-cost mining solutions.”

The company operated the Collinsville coal mine, which is located 80km south-west of Bowen, from 1996 to 2013, producing 4.5 million tonnes of product coal per annum comprising coking and thermal coal.

Thiess began offering mining services at QCoal Northern Hub in 2007 and has implemented productivity and cost improvement programmes to drive efficiencies.
