World’s ten largest nickel mines in 2021

Here are the ten largest nickel mines by production across the world in 2021, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Kola MMC Mine

The Kola MMC Mine is a surface and underground mine situated in Murmansk Oblast, Russia. Owned by MMC Norilsk Nickel , the brownfield mine produced an estimated 145.8 thousand tonnes of nickel in 2021.

2. Sorowako Mine

Located in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, the Sorowako Mine is owned by Vale . The surface mine produced an estimated 79 thousand tonnes of nickel in 2021. The mine will operate until 2045.

3. Taganito Mine

The Taganito Mine is a surface mine located in Surigao del Norte, Philippines. Owned by Nickel Asia , the greenfield mine produced an estimated 73.9 thousand tonnes of nickel in 2021. The mine will operate until 2049.

4. Rio Tuba Mine

Owned by Nickel Asia , the Rio Tuba Mine is a surface mine situated in Palawan, Philippines. The greenfield mine produced an estimated 46.8 thousand tonnes of nickel in 2021. The expected mine closure date is 2028.

5. Cerro Matoso Mine

The Cerro Matoso Mine is a surface mine situated in Cordoba, Colombia. Owned by South32 , the brownfield mine produced an estimated 42.8 thousand tonnes of nickel in 2021. The mine is expected to operate until 2029.

6. Weda Bay Project

The Weda Bay Project is a surface mine situated in Maluku, Indonesia. Owned by Tsingshan Holding Group , the greenfield mine produced an estimated 40 thousand tonnes of nickel in 2021. The mine will operate until 2069.

7. Voisey’s Bay Mine

Located in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, the Voisey’s Bay Mine is owned by Vale . The surface and underground mine produced an estimated 39.4 thousand tonnes of nickel in 2021. The mine will operate until 2034.

8. Mount Keith Mine

The Mount Keith Mine is a surface mine located in Western Australia, Australia. Owned by BHP, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 38.6 thousand tonnes of nickel in 2021. The mine will operate until 2037.

9. Raglan Mines

Owned by Glencore Plc, the Raglan Mines is an underground mine situated in Quebec, Canada. The brownfield mine produced an estimated 38.2 thousand tonnes of nickel in 2021. The expected mine closure date is 2027.

10. Barro Alto Mine

The Barro Alto Mine is a surface mine situated in Goias, Brazil. Owned by Anglo American Plc, the brownfield mine produced an estimated 35.2 thousand tonnes of nickel in 2021. The mine is expected to operate until 2040.
