World’s ten largest nickel mines in 2020

Here are the ten largest nickel mines by production across the world in 2020, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Sorowako Mine

The Sorowako Mine is a surface mine situated in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Owned by Vale, the brownfield mine produced an estimated 71.6 thousand tonnes of nickel in 2020. The mine will operate until 2045.

2. Taganito Mine

Located in Surigao del Norte, Philippines, the Taganito Mine is owned by Nickel Asia. The surface mine produced an estimated 67.324 thousand tonnes of nickel in 2020. The mine will operate until 2049.

3. Oktyabrsky Mine

The Oktyabrsky Mine is an underground mine located in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. Owned by MMC Norilsk Nickel , the brownfield mine produced an estimated 52.923 thousand tonnes of nickel in 2020. The mine will operate until 2025.

4. Rio Tuba Mine

Owned by Nickel Asia, the Rio Tuba Mine is a surface mine situated in Palawan, Philippines. The greenfield mine produced an estimated 46.571 thousand tonnes of nickel in 2020. The expected mine closure date is 2028.

5. Yiwan Mine

6. Komsomolsky Mine

7. Taimyrsky Mine

8. Cerro Matoso Mine

9. Raglan Mines

10. Murrin Murrin Mine

The Murrin Murrin Mine is a surface mine situated in Western Australia, Australia. Owned by Glencore Plc , the greenfield mine produced an estimated 36.4 thousand tonnes of nickel in 2020. The mine is expected to operate until 2042.
