World’s ten largest iron ore mines in 2020

Here are the ten largest iron ore mines by production across the world in 2020, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Serra Norte Mining Complex

The Serra Norte Mining Complex is a surface mine situated in Para, Brazil. Owned by Vale, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 106.092 mtpa of iron ore in 2020. The mine will operate until 2037.

2. Carajas Serra Sul S11D Project

Located in Para, Brazil, the Carajas Serra Sul S11D Project is owned by Vale. The surface mine produced an estimated 82.9 mtpa of iron ore in 2020. The mine will operate until 2058.

3. Yandi Mine

The Yandi Mine is a surface mine located in Western Australia, Australia. Owned by BHP, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 81.484 mtpa of iron ore in 2020. The mine will operate until 2023.

4. Mount Whaleback Mine

Owned by BHP, the Mount Whaleback Mine is a surface mine situated in Western Australia, Australia. The greenfield mine produced an estimated 77.225 mtpa of iron ore in 2020. The expected mine closure date is 2036.

5. Jimblebar Hub

7. Yandicoogina Mine

8. Christmas Creek Mine

The Christmas Creek Mine is a surface mine located in Western Australia, Australia. Owned by Fortescue Metals Group, the greenfield mine produced an estimated 56.369 mtpa of iron ore in 2020. The mine will operate until 2031.

9. Hope Downs Mine

Owned by Hancock Prospecting Pty, the Hope Downs Mine is a surface mine situated in Western Australia, Australia. The greenfield mine produced an estimated 49.045 mtpa of iron ore in 2020. The expected mine closure date is 2031.

10. Brockman 4 Mine

The Brockman 4 Mine is a surface mine situated in Western Australia, Australia. Owned by Rio Tinto, the brownfield mine produced an estimated 45.832 mtpa of iron ore in 2020. The mine is expected to operate until 2027.
