Here are the ten largest underground mining projects by production in the Middle East and Africa in 2020, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Impala Mine

The Impala Mine is a gold mining project in North West, South Africa. The brownfield project is owned by Impala Platinum Holdings and is due to operate until 2035. The mine produced an estimated 10.037Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 249.279 thousand ounces of gold in 2020.

2. Syferfontein Mine

The Syferfontein Mine is a coal mine owned by Sasol. Located in Gauteng, South Africa, the greenfield mine produced approximately 9.1Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 9.1 mtpa of coal in 2020.

8. Matla Mine

Located in Mpumalanga , South Africa, the Matla Mine is a coal mining project owned by Exxaro Resources. The mine is expected to operate until 2024.

The greenfield mine produced an estimated 6.728Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 6.859 mtpa of coal in the same year.

9. Greenside Mine

The Greenside Mine is a coal mine located in Mpumalanga , South Africa. Owned by Anglo American Plc, the brownfield project produced an estimated 6.388Mt of ROM in 2020.

The mine had an estimated production of 4.494 mtpa of coal in 2020. The Greenside Mine will operate until 2026.

10. Impumelelo Mine

Owned by Sasol, the Impumelelo Mine is a coal mine situated in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The mine is expected to operate until 2048.
