Ten biggest producing underground mines in Oceania in 2020

Here are the ten largest underground mining projects by production in Oceania in 2020, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Cadia Mine

The Cadia Mine is a gold mining project in New South Wales, Australia. The brownfield project is owned by Newcrest Mining and is due to operate until 2065. The mine produced an estimated 30.178Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 843.338 thousand ounces of gold in 2020.

2. Moranbah North Mine

The Moranbah North Mine is a coal mine owned by Anglo American Plc. Located in Queensland, Australia, the brownfield mine produced approximately 9.544Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 5.034 mtpa of coal in 2020. The expected mine closure date is 2039.

3. Olympic Dam Mine

Located in South Australia, Australia, the Olympic Dam Mine is a copper mining project owned by BHP. The mine is expected to operate until 2073.

The greenfield mine produced an estimated 8.672Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 171.6 thousand tonnes of copper in the same year.

4. Kestrel Mine

The Kestrel Mine is a coal mine located in Queensland, Australia. Owned by EMR Capital Group, the brownfield project produced an estimated 8.63Mt of ROM in 2020.

The mine had an estimated production of 7.204 mtpa of coal in 2020. The Kestrel Mine will operate until 2054.

5. NorthParkes Mine

Owned by China Molybdenum, the NorthParkes Mine is a copper mine situated in New South Wales, Australia. The mine is expected to operate until 2037.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 7.169Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 33.746 thousand tonnes of copper in 2020.

6. Ernest Henry Mine

The Ernest Henry Mine is a copper mining project in Queensland, Australia. The greenfield project is owned by Glencore Plc and is due to operate until 2026. The mine produced an estimated 7.068Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 20.688 thousand tonnes of copper in 2020.

7. Oaky Creek Mine

The Oaky Creek Mine is a coal mine owned by Glencore Plc. Located in Queensland, Australia, the brownfield mine produced approximately 6.463Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 4.986 mtpa of coal in 2020. The expected mine closure date is 2030.

8. Narrabri Underground Mine

Located in New South Wales, Australia, the Narrabri Underground Mine is a coal mining project owned by Whitehaven Coal. The mine is expected to operate until 2038.

The greenfield mine produced an estimated 6.111Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 6.547 mtpa of coal in the same year.

9. Broadmeadow Mine

The Broadmeadow Mine is a coal mine located in Queensland, Australia. Owned by BHP, the greenfield project produced an estimated 6.035Mt of ROM in 2020.

The mine had an estimated production of 4.86 mtpa of coal in 2020.

10. Grasstree Mine

Owned by Anglo American Plc, the Grasstree Mine is a coal mine situated in Queensland, Australia. The mine is expected to operate until 2028.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 5.925Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 4.3 mtpa of coal in 2020.
