Ten biggest producing surface mines in South and Central America in 2020

Here are the ten largest surface mining projects by production in South and Central America in 2020, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Escondida Mine

The Escondida Mine is a copper mining project in Antofagasta, Chile. The greenfield project is owned by BHP and is due to operate until 2078. The mine produced an estimated 145.031Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 1,126 thousand tonnes of copper in 2020.

2. Cerro Verde Mine

The Cerro Verde Mine is a copper mine owned by Freeport-McMoRan. Located in Arequipa, Peru, the brownfield mine produced approximately 116.742Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 371.94 thousand tonnes of copper in 2020. The expected mine closure date is 2051.

3. Serra Norte Mining Complex

Located in Para, Brazil, the Serra Norte Mining Complex is an iron ore mining project owned by Vale. The mine is expected to operate until 2037.

The greenfield mine produced an estimated 110.282Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 106.092 mtpa of iron ore in the same year.

4. Carajas Serra Sul S11D Project

The Carajas Serra Sul S11D Project is an iron ore mine located in Para, Brazil. Owned by Vale, the greenfield project produced an estimated 82.9Mt of ROM in 2020.

The mine had an estimated production of 82.9 mtpa of iron ore in 2020. The Carajas Serra Sul S11D Project will operate until 2058.

5. Collahuasi Mine

Owned by Anglo American Plc, the Collahuasi Mine is a copper mine situated in Tarapaca, Chile. The mine is expected to operate until 2088.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 71.959Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 629.1 thousand tonnes of copper in 2020.

6. MVC Copper Project

The MVC Copper Project is a copper mining project in Cachapoal, Chile. The brownfield project is owned by Amerigo Resources and is due to operate until 2037. The mine produced an estimated 71.037Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 25.242 thousand tonnes of copper in 2020.

7. Buenavista del Cobre Mine

The Buenavista del Cobre Mine is a copper mine owned by Grupo Mexico SAB de CV. Located in Sonora, Mexico, the brownfield mine produced approximately 70.365Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 438.36 thousand tonnes of copper in 2020.

8. Radomiro Tomic Mine

Located in Antofagasta, Chile, the Radomiro Tomic Mine is a copper mining project owned by Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile.

The greenfield mine produced an estimated 60.077Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 260.653 thousand tonnes of copper in the same year.

9. Cobre Panama Project

The Cobre Panama Project is a copper mine located in Colon, Panama. Owned by First Quantum Minerals, the greenfield project produced an estimated 59.024Mt of ROM in 2020.

The mine had an estimated production of 205.548 thousand tonnes of copper in 2020. The Cobre Panama Project will operate until 2055.

10. Los Pelambres Mine

Owned by Antofagasta Plc, the Los Pelambres Mine is a copper mine situated in Elqui, Chile. The mine is expected to operate until 2034.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 58.783Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 359.6 thousand tonnes of copper in 2020.
