Ten biggest producing surface mines in Europe in 2020

Here are the ten largest surface mining projects by production in Europe in 2020, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Belchatow Mine

The Belchatow Mine is a coal mining project in Lodz, Poland. The greenfield project is owned by PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna and is due to operate until 2040. The mine produced an estimated 41.558Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 31.584 mtpa of coal in 2020.

2. Hambach Mine

The Hambach Mine is a coal mine owned by RWE. Located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, the brownfield mine produced approximately 39.61Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 30.104 mtpa of coal in 2020. The expected mine closure date is 2042.

3. Aitik Mine

Located in Norrbotten, Sweden, the Aitik Mine is a copper mining project owned by Boliden.

The greenfield mine produced an estimated 38.795Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 91 thousand tonnes of copper in the same year.

4. Garzweiler Mine

The Garzweiler Mine is a coal mine located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Owned by RWE, the greenfield project produced an estimated 37.828Mt of ROM in 2020.

The mine had an estimated production of 28.749 mtpa of coal in 2020. The Garzweiler Mine will operate until 2045.

5. Maritsa East Mine

Owned by Bulgarian Energy Holding, the Maritsa East Mine is a coal mine situated in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria. The mine is expected to operate until 2087.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 31.494Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 23.935 mtpa of coal in 2020.

6. Ptolemais South Field Mine

The Ptolemais South Field Mine is a coal mining project in West Macedonia, Greece. The brownfield project is owned by Public Power. The mine produced an estimated 23.902Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 18.165 mtpa of coal in 2020.

7. Welzow-Sud Mine

The Welzow-Sud Mine is a coal mine owned by Energeticky a Prumyslovy Holding. Located in Brandenburg, Germany, the brownfield mine produced approximately 23.54Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 17.89 mtpa of coal in 2020.

8. Inden Mine

Located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, the Inden Mine is a coal mining project owned by RWE. The mine is expected to operate until 2030.

The brownfield mine produced an estimated 20.417Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 15.517 mtpa of coal in the same year.

9. Nochten Mine

The Nochten Mine is a coal mine located in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Owned by Energeticky a Prumyslovy Holding, the brownfield project produced an estimated 18.183Mt of ROM in 2020.

The mine had an estimated production of 13.819 mtpa of coal in 2020.

10. Riotinto Copper Project

Owned by Atalaya Mining Plc, the Riotinto Copper Project is a copper mine situated in Huelva, Spain. The mine is expected to operate until 2032.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 15Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 21.98 thousand tonnes of copper in 2020.
