Epiroc is a full solutions provider within the mining and construction industry, including equipment for mining and construction as well as related aftermarket. The company also offers automation, digitalization and electrification solutions.

The company is a Category Award Winner for Business Expansion in the 2023 Mining Technology Excellence Awards as it continued to make strides with its battery conversion technology and electrification solutions, including the first conversions of Scooptram loaders in Europe, and offering batteries as a service.

One of the mining industry’s biggest challenges when it comes to decarbonization is the emissions produced by vehicle fleets. Diesel vehicles are not only bad for the environment but also result in substantial fuel costs, especially when run inefficiently with unnecessary idling.

Epiroc’s solution to these problems is the conversion of diesel vehicles to battery electric. As well as cutting down emissions from running diesel vehicles, the process also has cost benefits as existing vehicles can have their lives prolonged through conversion rather than being scrapped.

The company’s first conversions were completed in Canada in 2021 and this was followed by the launch of the business in Europe in 2022 and the first conversion of a Scooptram ST1030 in Spain. While the company’s Scooptram loaders are the first vehicles to undergo conversion Epiroc are expanding the service to other mining vehicles, like underground mine trucks.

Epiroc also offers other electrification solutions including batteries as a service (BaaS). Rather than buying or leasing batteries Epiroc manages the batteries on a client’s behalf, including tracking performance and replacing when necessary. This eliminates the risks of battery ownership and opens the door for more companies to embrace electrification.
