A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11897772B2) discloses a method for preparing reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) involving specific steps. The process includes heating a carbon source within a temperature range of 480°C to 520°C, followed by cooling the heated carbon source, and then subjecting it to further heating under vacuum at a temperature between 850°C to 950°C to obtain the desired rGO. The carbon source used in this method is specified to be coal tar pitch, with particular characteristics such as softening temperature, ash content, quinoline insoluble (QI), toluene insoluble (TI), and moisture content.

Furthermore, the patent outlines additional parameters for the method, such as the specific temperature ranges and time periods for heating and cooling the carbon source, as well as the vacuum level required during the final heating step. The resulting rGO is expected to exhibit a conductivity ranging from 1900 S/cm to 2100 S/cm, a surface area between 45 m2 g-1 to 55 m2 g-1, and a yield ranging from 85% to 95% with respect to the carbon source. These specific characteristics ensure the quality and consistency of the produced rGO, making it suitable for various applications in the field of graphene-based materials.
