Plated steel sheet with zn-mg-al plating layer
A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US12006576B2) discloses a plated steel sheet with unique characteristics. The sheet includes a base steel sheet with a Zn—Mg—Al-based plating layer on at least one surface, along with a Fe—Al-based inhibition layer between the base steel sheet and the plating layer. The plating layer consists of 4 to 10% Mg, 5.1 to 25% Al, and the rest being Zn and impurities. Notably, the plating layer contains a MgZn2 phase at a fraction of 24 to 50 wt %, with an Al single phase present within the MgZn2 phase at a ratio of 1 to 30% in the thickness direction.
Furthermore, the patented plated steel sheet features an exposed MgZn2 phase with an average diameter of 5 to 50 µm on the surface of the plating layer. Additionally, the Al single phase constitutes 1 to 15% of the total area of the plating layer, while the surface roughness (Ra) of the plating layer ranges from 0.5 to 2.0 µm. The inhibition layer, made of a Fe—Al-based intermetallic compound such as Fe2Al5, FeAl3, or FeAl5, contains less than 10 wt % of Zn and has a thickness of 0.02 to 2 µm. This patented technology aims to enhance the performance and durability of plated steel sheets in various applications.
