Out of 359 active assignees during the review quarter, POSCO registered a growth change of 90% with 222 patent grants, followed by JSC ArcelorMittal Temirtau with 26% (139), Kobe Steel with -31% (169), JFE Steel with -33% (263) and Hitachi Metals with -44% (139).

The least active IP protected technology applications include Electric Batteries and Non-Metals with 14 and nine patent grants, respectively.

Assignee highest and lowest growth rate

Henan Polytechnic University; Korea Zinc; and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries saw the leading growth rates of 700%; 500%; and 300%, respectively in patent grants during May-Jul 2021 compared with the previous three-month period, while Guizhou University saw the lowest growth rate of -83%.

Patenting activity: Leading themes in the May-Jul 2021 quarter

Climate Change led the mining sector with 105 patents during the review quarter, followed by Vehicle lightweighting and Industrial Automation with 48 and 36 patents, respectively.

 

 

 

Patenting activity: Sub sector composition

In terms of sub-sector composition, Underground Equipment led IP protection with 1,109 patent grants during the review quarter, followed by Excavation & Loading with 372, Drilling & Blasting with 219, Longwall Mining Equipment with 167, and Mining with 92.

 

 

 

IP protection activity by region

China led IP protection activity with 2,063 grants and 1,609 new filings during the May-Jul 2021 quarter, followed by Korea (South) with 303 grants and 632 new filings.

Japan came in next with 346 grants and 355 new filings. The US and the European Patent Office stood next with 267 grants and 304 new filings; 170 grants and 239 new filings, respectively.
