Davis Polk & Wardwell and Cassels Brock & Blackwell have been ranked as the leading legal advisers for mergers & acquisitions (M&A) in terms of value and volume, respectively, for the first quarter of 2024 (Q1 2024), according to the latest legal advisers league table by GlobalData.

The analysis of the database of GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company and the parent of Mining Technology, has shown Davis Polk & Wardwell securing the top position by value, advising on two deals amounting to $2.2bn.

Cassels Brock & Blackwell led in terms of volume, advising on four transactions.

Analysis of GlobalData’s Deals Database revealed that Ashurst, Cravath Swaine & Moore and Sullivan & Cromwell jointly occupied the second position in terms of value, each advising on one deal worth $2.2bn.

Following closely was Herbert Smith Freehills, with deals totalling $1.65bn.

In terms of deal volume, McCarthy Tetrault took the second spot with three deals.

GlobalData lead analyst Aurojyoti Bose said: “Despite a decline in number of deals advised by it in Q1 2024 compared to Q1 2023, Cassels Brock & Blackwell led by volume. In fact, its ranking by volume improved from second position in Q1 2023 to the top position in Q1 2024.

“Meanwhile, Davis Polk & Wardwell, apart from leading by value, also occupied the third position by volume during Q1 2024.”
