Cimic Group’s mining subsidiary, Thiess, has been awarded a mining expansion contract from PT Harum Energy at the Mahakam Sumber Jaya (MSJ) mine in East Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Effective until March 2026, the expansion is worth A$300m ($202.26m).

The contract allows Thiess to operate in an adjacent area to the current mining operations.

The scope of the agreement expands the current mining operations, which include load and haul, drill and blast, haul road maintenance and rehabilitation.

Thiess group executive Asia Cluny Randell said: “We are excited to take on this new challenge and continue our strong partnership with Harum Energy, where we have been working together at the MSJ mine.”

Thiess plans to introduce its first autonomy programme at the MSJ mine in Indonesia as part of its sustainable mining practices.

The programme will focus on implementing autonomous drilling operations to enhance safety and production efficiency, as well as reduce emissions.

Thiess Group executive chair and CEO Michael Wright said: “As a long-standing partner of Harum Energy since 2008, we are very pleased to have been entrusted with this expansion at MSJ.

“This presents opportunities for our project team to continue delivering successful outcomes for our client and the local communities, through an absolute focus on sustainable, technology-enabled mining operations.”

Last year, Thiess secured a contract renewal to provide mining services at the MSJ coal mine.

Under this three-year contract extension, Thiess will continue to provide mine design and planning, drill and blast, overburden removal, load and haul, asset maintenance and management, rehabilitation, water management and haul road maintenance services.
