App

Germany-based energy company RWE Generation is to use the IBM MobileFirst for iOS app to manage maintenance of large operations equipment used to mine brown coal.

The first in the suite of apps, known as Asset Care, will be jointly developed by RWE and IBM and deployed to RWE field forces using iPads to improve maintenance efficiency.

RWE Generation technical support head Mark Eberlein said: "Apple and IBM are transforming enterprise mobility.

"Tapping that collaboration gives our employees real-time access to constantly monitor the equipment and to more precisely forecast situations when a machine might be running into an unplanned outage."

IBM MobileFirst for iOS Asset Care will run on the iPad mini. It will propose the specific maintenance task previously determined to prevent outage or damage and supports RWE maintenance engineers, technicians and craftsmen.

Asset Care eliminates the manual process of filling forms by all crew to initiate and keep record of the maintenance jobs required and streamlines tasks.

"Together with RWE Generation, we’ve applied our deep knowledge of the energy and utilities industry to build an app that will raise the efficiency of the maintenance workforce."

RWE produces electricity through an energy mix, including lignite or brown coal. The company uses machines such as bucket-wheel excavators, spreaders and conveyors to mine up to 100 million tonnes of lignite per year in opencast mines.

IBM MobileFirst for iOS solutions combine the power of enterprise data and analytics with user experience to redefine the way enterprises empower their professionals to interact, learn, connect, and perform.
