Here are the five largest iron ore mines by production in the US, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Minntac Mine

The Minntac Mine is a surface mine located in Minnesota. It is owned by United States Steel and produced an estimated 12.791 MTPA of iron ore in 2020. The mine will operate until 2031.

2. Tilden Mine

Located in Michigan, the Tilden Mine is owned by Cleveland-Cliffs. The surface mine produced an estimated 6.3 MTPA of iron ore in 2020.

3. Hibbing Taconite Mines

The Hibbing Taconite Mines is located in Minnesota. It is owned by Cleveland-Cliffs and produced an estimated 5.5 MTPA of iron ore in 2020. The mine will operate until 2024.

4. United Taconite Mine

The United Taconite Mine, owned by Cleveland-Cliffs, is a surface mine located in Minnesota. The mine produced an estimated 5.2 MTPA of iron ore in 2020.

5. Northshore-Peter Mitchel Mine

Owned by Cleveland-Cliffs, the Northshore-Peter Mitchel Mine is a surface mine located in Minnesota. It produced an estimated 3.8 MTPA of iron ore in 2020.
