Five largest iron ore mines in South Africa in 2020

Here are the five largest iron ore mines by production in South Africa, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Sishen Mine

The Sishen Mine is a surface mine located in Northern Cape. It is owned by Anglo American Plc and produced an estimated 25.353 MTPA of iron ore in 2020. The mine will operate until 2039.

2. Khumani Mine

Located in Northern Cape, the Khumani Mine is owned by African Rainbow Minerals. The surface mine produced an estimated 13.1 MTPA of iron ore in 2020. The mine will operate until 2041.

3. Kolomela Mine

The Kolomela Mine is located in Northern Cape. It is owned by Anglo American Plc and produced an estimated 11.668 MTPA of iron ore in 2020. The mine will operate until 2031.

4. Beeshoek Iron Ore Mine

The Beeshoek Iron Ore Mine, owned by African Rainbow Minerals, is a surface mine located in Northern Cape. The mine produced an estimated 2.99 MTPA of iron ore in 2020. The mine will operate until 2027.

5. Tshipi Borwa Mine

Owned by Jupiter Mines, the Tshipi Borwa Mine is a surface mine located in Northern Cape. It produced an estimated 1.439 MTPA of iron ore in 2020. The mine will operate until 2077.
