Here are the five largest coal mines by production in the US, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. North Antelope Rochelle Mine

The North Antelope Rochelle Mine is a surface mine located in Wyoming. It is owned by Peabody Energy and produced an estimated 59.965 MTPA of coal in 2020. The mine will operate until 2040.

2. Black Thunder Mine

Located in Wyoming, the Black Thunder Mine is owned by Arch Resources. The surface mine produced an estimated 45.53 MTPA of coal in 2020.

3. Antelope Mine

The Antelope Mine is located in Wyoming. It is owned by Navajo Transitional Energy and produced an estimated 21.15 MTPA of coal in 2020. The mine will operate until 2028.

4. Freedom Mine

The Freedom Mine, owned by Nacco Industries, is a surface mine located in North Dakota. The mine produced an estimated 12.349 MTPA of coal in 2020.

5. MC#1 Mine

Owned by ACNR Holdings, the MC#1 Mine is an underground mine located in Illinois. It produced an estimated 11.701 MTPA of coal in 2020.
