The global mining industry noticed a 0.9% drop in IT hiring activity in September 2022 over the previous month, led by Rio Tinto’s 7.35% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The mining industry’s overall hiring activity increased 2.1% when compared with August 2022.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 4.14% share of the global mining industry’s hiring activity in September 2022, down 0.12% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of September 2022 were 3.97% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 10.32% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive mining IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 28.12% emerged as the top IT occupation in the mining hiring activity in September 2022, a 12.87% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 26.52% in September 2022, down 12.63% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Computer and Information Analysts with a 21.09% share in September 2022, a growth of 1.54% over the previous month, and Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 15.02% share in September 2022 and a rise of 20.51% over August 2022.

Top five mining companies by recruitment activity in September 2022

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average growth of 105.26% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global mining industry during September 2022 over August 2022.

Rio Tinto posted 23 IT jobs in September 2022 and registered a rise of 27.78% over the previous month, followed by AngloGold Ashanti with 15 jobs and a flat growth. Ramelius Resources with 15 IT jobs and Heraeus with 13 jobs, recorded a flat growth and a flat growth, respectively, while Evolution Mining recorded a 71.43% rise with 12 job postings during September 2022.

Regional composition of IT hiring in mining industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global mining IT hiring activity in September 2022 with a 37.06% share, which marked a 27.95% drop over the previous month.

Asia-Pacific stood next with 34.5%, registering a 71.43% month-on-month growth. Europe was the third leading region with a 20.45% share and an 11.11% drop over August 2022.

In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 5.11% and a month-on-month drop of 36%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 2.88%, registering a 50% increase over the previous month.
