Australia accounts for 7% of global production, with the other largest producers being China (52%), India (10%), Indonesia (7%) and the US (6%). Exports of coal from Australia increased by 5% to 383Mt in 2022 over 2021, with the highest share being exported to Japan. Australia’s coal exports are expected to grow at a CAGR of 0.56% between 2022 and 2026, to 392Mt by 2026.

Leading producers of coal in Australia are Glencore, BHP, Peabody Energy, Anglo American, Mitsui and South32. Glencore's output was 65.75Mt in 2021, down by 3% on 2020. BHP produced 51.74Mt, an increase of 3%, and output from Peabody Energy was 18.08Mt, a decrease of 1% on the previous year.
