Notably, the number of batteries-related patent applications in the mining industry was 87 in Q4 2023, versus 120 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 56% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Toyo Seikan Group filed the most batteries patents within the mining industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 14 batteries-related patents in the quarter, compared with 6 in the previous quarter. It was followed by ENEOS with 12 batteries patent filings, Mitsui Mining & Smelting (9 filings), and Korea Zinc (8 filings) in Q4 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by Japan with a 28% share of total patent filings

The largest share of batteries related patent filings in the mining industry in Q4 2023 was in Japan with 28%, followed by China (21%) and the US (10%). The share represented by Japan was 6% higher than the 22% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
