The top five companies accounted for 46% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that POSCO filed the most batteries patents within the mining industry in Q2 2024. The company filed 12 batteries-related patents in the quarter, compared with 2 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Mitsui Mining & Smelting with 10 batteries patent filings, Daido Steel (9 filings), and ArcelorMittal (8 filings) in Q2 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 26% share of total patent filings
The largest share of batteries related patent filings in the mining industry in Q2 2024 was in China with 26%, followed by Japan (14%) and the US (13%). The share represented by China was 9% higher than the 16% share it accounted for in Q1 2024.
