Notably, Computer and Mathematical Occupations jobs accounted for a 21% share of the global mining industry’s artificial intelligence-related total new job postings in Q1 2023, up 2% over the prior quarter.

Computer and Mathematical Occupations drive artificial intelligence-related hiring activity

Computer and Mathematical Occupations, with a share of 21%, emerged as the top artificial intelligence-related job roles within the mining industry in Q1 2023, with new job postings rising by 2% quarter-on-quarter. Architecture and Engineering Occupations came in second with a share of 16% in Q1 2023, with new job postings dropping by 4% over the previous quarter.

The other prominent artificial intelligence roles include Management Occupations with an 8% share in Q1 2023, Installation, Maintenance, and Repair Occupations with a 3% share of new job postings.

Top five companies in mining industry accounted for 50% of hiring activity

The top companies, in terms of number of new job postings tracked by GlobalData, as of Q1 2023 were ABB, Eaton, Caterpillar, Komatsu, and Rio Tinto. Together they accounted for a combined share of 50% of all artificial intelligence-related new jobs in the mining industry.

ABB posted 326 artificial intelligence-related new jobs in Q1 2023, Eaton 157 jobs, Caterpillar 150 jobs, Komatsu 114 jobs, and Rio Tinto 106 jobs, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics.

Hiring activity was driven by the US with a 43.78% share of total new job postings, Q1 2023

The largest share of artificial intelligence-related new job postings in the mining industry in Q1 2023 was in the US with 43.78% followed by India (8.02%) and Canada (6.63%). The share represented by the US was six percentage points higher than the 38.24% share it accounted for in Q4 2022.
