Finnish power solutions provider Wärtsilä and De Beers Marine have signed an agreement to replace generating sets aboard the latter’s diamond mining vessel Debmar Pacific.
Under the terms of the agreement, Wärtsilä will equip the ship with new gensets to extend the vessel’s lifetime and reduce its specific fuel oil consumption (SFOC).

According to Wärtsilä, the new gensets are more reliable and need less maintenance, enabling lesser operational disruptions and reduced expenditure.
De Beers Marine general manager Domingos Valbom said: “Offshore mining operations require reliable, cost-effective power. By investing in efficient, modern generating sets, we can significantly improve the availability of Debmarine Namibia’s vessels and thereby increase productivity.
“In addition, we are unifying the engine base to Wärtsilä engines on some vessels, including a recently completed newbuild.”
Originally built in the 1970s, Debmar Pacific is employed by De Beers to conduct diamond mining operations off the coast of Namibia.

By GlobalDataThe vessel is owned and operated by Debmarine Namibia, which is a joint venture entity between De Beers Group and the Namibian Government.
Wärtsilä South Europe and Africa Services vice-president Serge Begue said: “In addition, its fuel consumption will be lower, contributing to both better environmental performance and reduced total cost of ownership.”
The agreement comes after the companies reached similar agreements last year to provide new Wärtsilä gensets to Debmarine Namibia’s diamond mining vessels Grand Banks and Debmar Atlantic.
Wärtsilä is currently working on upgrading the engine control system in Debmarine Namibia’s diamond-mining vessel Mafuta.
