The Government of British Columbia (BC) has reached an agreement to offer a share of the mineral tax revenue from the Brucejack gold mine to the Nisga’a Nation.

The Brucejack underground mine is located in north-western BC and features a production capacity of 2,700t of gold per day.

It is currently owned and operated by Pretium Resources.

The revenue-sharing deal is intended to allow the Nisga’a Nation to have access to a source of revenue.

"Part of our commitment to a new government-to-government relationship with First Nations, based on recognition of rights, includes sharing the wealth from natural resource projects in the province."

BC Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Minister Scott Fraser said: “Part of our commitment to a new government-to-government relationship with First Nations, based on recognition of rights, includes sharing the wealth from natural resource projects in the province.

“Together, we can improve the lives of people living in First Nations communities and create a strong economy for generations to come, by sitting down with First Nations as true partners in economic development within their territories.”

The agreement is expected to generate more than $8m per year for the Nisga’a Nation.

Nisga’a Lisims Government President Eva Clayton said: “Bringing prosperity and self-reliance to the Nisga’a Nation is the first priority of Nisga’a Lisims Government.

“We have developed a strong working relationship with Pretium Resources, and look forward to our continued collaboration on the Brucejack Gold Mine.”

The latest deal follows the signing of a co-operation and benefits agreement between the Nisga’a Nation and Pretium for the Brucejack project in 2015.

Pretium agreed to provide financial support and other benefits to the Nisga’a Nation upon the achievement of certain project milestones under the deal.

The previous agreement also included a commitment from Pretium to provide education and training for Nisga’a citizens, as well as offering various contracting opportunities to businesses in the community.
