The Canadian Government has granted approval to Seabridge Gold to use natural water bodies in a tailings management facility (TMF) at its Kerr-Sulphurets-Mitchell (KSM) project in north-western British Columbia (BC). 

The permit was granted after the government has passed a regulatory amendment to Schedule 2 of the Metal Mining Effluent Regulations (MMER) under the Fisheries Act.

It is subject to strict bonding and fishery habit compensation requirements that were identified during the three-year amendment review process. 

Seabridge Gold chairman and CEO Rudi Fronk said: "Receipt of this amendment represents a significant permitting milestone for KSM, equivalent in many ways to our receipt of environmental assessment approvals from the provincial and federal governments in 2014.

Located in the upper tributaries of Teigen and Treaty Creeks that form part of the Nass River drainage, the TMF will store the project’s ore-processing by-products in order to reduce environmental impacts downstream.

Under a preliminary feasibility study, KSM project has proven and probable reserves totalling 38.8 million ounces of gold and 10.2 billion pounds of copper.
