Sierra Metals has announced its shutdowns at operations in Peru and Mexico will be extended, after the nations’ governments further extended suspensions of all non-essential business activities. Peru’s suspension is effective until 10 May and Mexico’s until 30 May. Due to the disruptions, the company has suspended its 2020 production guidance until it concludes a review of its operations.

Fortuna Silver Mines has implemented health and safety protocols at its Caylloma mine in Peru, which continues to operate during the Covid-19 pandemic. These protocols include medical screening, use of protective equipment, social distancing measures, improved site and camp hygiene, among others. Through its testing, the company has identified positive results for Covid-19 in six individuals, all of whom remain asymptomatic.

The National Assembly of Venezuela has condemned President Nicolas Maduro’s order this month to lift the long-standing prohibition on mining in six rivers in its Amazon region. Activists and lawmakers said that the move to allow gold and diamond mining in the rivers may worsen environmental damage in the Amazon and could also fuel the spread of Covid-19.
