Canadian health and safety organisation Workplace Safety North (WSN) has announced the hiring of a new CEO and two new vice-presidents to ‘support the resource-based sector’.

Former vice president of prevention services and acting president and CEO Paul Andre has been named as WSN’s new CEO and president. Andre’s career in safety services spans more than 25 years, with eight years as a WSN executive.

Mike Parent has been appointed to Andre’s former position as vice president of prevention services following his work as the organisation’s director of mining since 2015. Ted Hanley, who served as the general manager of Ontario Mine Rescue since August 2014, has been named as WSN’s new vice president of mine rescue and emergency services.

Following his appointment, Andre said: “I believe the strength of WSN is rooted in its people and our ability evolves to meet a constantly changing occupational health and safety landscape. We continue to anticipate and be responsive to provincial occupational health and safety needs.”

Andre previously served as the CEO and field services manager of the Pulp and Paper Health and Safety Association, a non-profit organisation that aims to improve safety across a range of North American industries. He has also volunteered as the chair of the board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals.

Hanley has similar experience in voluntary work, being part of Ontario Mine Rescue since 2008 and a member of the mine rescue competition team at Glencore’s Kidd Operations in Timmins. Parent has also worked as a miner and paramedic, before his career in health and safety.

Parent said: “I was born and raised in northern Ontario, so I’m sensitive to the unique needs of the north and plan to align WSN resources and services to help support northern employers.

“I’m also looking forward to building on the cutting-edge safety culture audit programme WSN developed that focuses on leading indicators.”
