Wood has secured a contract worth $18m (£14.16m) from gold mining company Newmont to support the Lihir gold mine in Papua New Guinea.

Under the contract, Wood will offer consulting and engineering services to bolster Newmont’s capital works programme.

This includes projects focused on maintaining and enhancing the Lihir operation’s condition and performance.

Wood will be responsible for providing consulting and engineering services to support and enhance the safe and efficient processing of gold.

The company’s scope of work encompasses the delivery of concept and feasibility studies, detailed design and construction management services.

This contract, with an initial three-year term, is effective immediately.

Wood plans to manage the contract from its office in Brisbane, Australia.

Wood minerals, metals and life sciences president Jim Shaughnessy said: “We have been working with Newmont for over 20 years and are proud to be selected to deliver the Lihir capital works programme.

“Minerals and metals continues to be a key market for Wood – this project lends itself well to our strong expertise in mineral processing and our steadfast commitment to sustainable mining. Located on Niolam Island in Papua New Guinea’s New Ireland Province, the Lihir mine is said to be one of the world’s largest producing gold mines.

In 2023, the mine reported gold production of 670,000oz.

In 2020, Newcrest Mining selected Worley to provide engineering, procurement and construction management services for the Lihir gold mine.
