As ore mines ramp up and come on stream, the total number of active surface machines (including trucks, excavators, shovels, loaders, graders and dozers) is forecast to rise from 141,470 in 2020 to 167,367 by 2025. This will be a CAGR of 3.4% from 2020 to 2025. The largest contributor to this growth is expected to be trucks, particularly smaller-sized trucks with shorter lifespans, used extensively in parts of Asia Pacific. Underground mining equipment is similarly expected to see a CAGR of 2.3% in this same time frame, with the number of mining trucks and loaders/LHDs in active underground mines expected to rise to 19,853 by 2025. GlobalData’s extensive mine-site research and equipment models have been used to build a complete view of mobile mining equipment populations globally for trucks, loaders, graders, dozers, excavators and shovels. The incident occurred on 10 October following a fall of ground at the mine site.

Operations at the gold mine have been suspended and an investigation on the cause of the incident is currently under way.

Harmony Gold Mining Company CEO Peter Steenkamp said: “The executives and management express their sincerest condolences go to our colleagues’ family, friends and colleagues.

“We believe that our proactive safety culture that has been reinforced through various initiatives is the responsibility of each and every one of our stakeholders at Harmony.

“We must all continue making every effort to ensure a safe working place and that we reach our goal of zero harm across all our operations.”

In June, Harmony Gold reported a fatality at Moab Khotsong gold mine near Orkney in the North West province of South Africa. According to the company, the body of this employee was found underground at the facility after an intensive search began following information that an employee was missing at the end of the day shift on 2 June.

In May, the company announced its plans to establish Covid-19 testing facilities at its sites.
