Gujarat NRE has received approval from the New South Wales Planning Assessment Commission for its $62m upgrade and expansion plans at the NRE Wongawilli mine west of Dapto.

The commission’s approval will enable the firm conduct mining operations in the Wongawilli seam in the north-eastern part of the lease.

It also allows for the construction of an underground roadway to provide access to the western portion of the lease.

Gujarat NRE has also received approval for further works, including augmenting, upgrading and use of the existing infrastructure at the mine, and extraction of remnant coal reserves within existing mine areas.

Further works also include extraction of two million tonnes of coal per year from the Bulli and Wongawilli seams, rail transportation of coal from the mine and rehabilitation of the site.
