Mines and batteries: a perfect match?

Finnish state-owned mining company Terrafame has received a building permit from local authorities to build a battery chemicals plant on the site of its Sotkamo nickel/zinc mine. An environmental impact assessment is still being carried out, but previous environmental breaches at the mine call its eco-performance into question. The benefits of integrating battery chemical production into a mine site’s refining operations are obvious, but can it be done in a sustainable way?
