Notably, the number of environmental sustainability-related patent applications in the mining industry was 408 in Q1 2024, versus 584 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 59% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that JFE filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the mining industry in Q1 2024. The company filed 100 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 112 in the previous quarter. It was followed by China Baowu Steel Group with 79 environmental sustainability patent filings, ArcelorMittal (24 filings), and Mitsui Mining & Smelting (21 filings) in Q1 2024.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 28% share of total patent filings

The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the mining industry in Q1 2024 was in China with 28%, followed by Japan (13%) and the US (9%). The share represented by China was 122% lower than the 151% share it accounted for in Q4 2023.
