Industrial Progressing Cavity and Rotary Lobe Pumps


For more than six decades, NETZSCH has manufactured positive displacement pumps worldwide. The NETZSCH ranges of NEMO® progressing cavity pumps and TORNADO® rotary lobe pumps are designed specifically for the most demanding pumping applications. NETZSCH pumps range in size from the industry’s smallest metering pumps to high-volume pumps for de-watering duties in the mining industry.

The headquarters of NETZSCH Pumps & Systems is in Germany, but the manufacturing facilities are located in Brazil, China, India and the US. With 30 direct sales offices and more than 200 agents, NETZSCH is ideally located wherever you are.

Positive displacement pumps

The NETZSCH ranges of progressing cavity pumps, or eccentric screw pumps as they are sometimes known, are used in a wide range of applications in the mining industry, including:

Progressing cavity pumps

The pumping characteristics of the NEMO® progressing cavity pump make it the ideal choice for many applications in the mining industry. The pumps are traditionally installed for products or applications where:

The NEMO® range of progressing cavity pumps are designed to be robust in the most demanding of installations. The standard range can handle capacities of as low as a few millilitres per hour up to 500m³/hr. Discharge pressures of 48bar are possible on the standard range whilst special ranges are capable of handling discharge pressures of up to 240bar.
The TORNADO® range of rotary lobe pumps is suitable for capacities of up to 1000m³/hr at maximum pressure of 10bar. The TORNADO T2 pump has been specifically designed to be as maintenance-friendly as possible.
A NEMO® NM125 progressing cavity pump installed on a coal slurry application. The pump transfers approximately 50 m³/hr of slurry at pressures of up to 17bar.
This TORNADO® T2 pump has been installed vertically to replace a peristaltic pump, for transferring mineral slurry at 20m³/hr.
The NEMO® range of de-watering pumps has a capacity of up to 300m³/hr and head capabilities of 72bar on the standard range. Higher flowrates and pressures are available on request.

Rotary lobe pumps

The TORNADO® T2 rotary lobe pump has been specifically designed to give exceptional service life due to the pumping elements always having an elastomer-to-metal contact. TORNADO® pumps are particularly service and maintenance-friendly; all parts that come into contact with the media are directly accessible without dismantling the pipework or disconnecting the drive.

The innovative design of the TORNADO® T2 provides quick and easy access to the pump chamber, including the inlet and outlet ports, by simply removing the cover plate. This provides improved access for inspection, cleaning, service and replacing parts. The service-friendly design of the tooth belt drive means that, should it be necessary, the belt is easy and quick to replace. Benefits of the tooth belt drive system are accuracy of synchronisation, elimination of timing gears and oil lubrication, less heat generation and quieter operation.

TORNADO® pumps are installed where:

  • Installation space is limited
  • High flow-rates are required
  • The product contains solid particles
  • The product is abrasive
  • High-density products need to conveyed
  • Corrosive products are to be transferred
  • The application has low suction pressure

An African mine owner was in a fix because a pump, which was critical in terms of the process of filling tankers with an ammonium nitrate emulsion from silos, not only had too low a performance level but was also constantly breaking down: the pin joint could not withstand the torque during the system's frequent stops and starts and there was severe bending of the coupling rod.

Dosing Pumps for Various Applications from a Single Source

A platinum mine needed dosing systems for flocculants, anti-foaming agents and flushing water on critical seals. The operator had originally intended to use different types of pumps for these various applications; peristaltic pumps for the flocculants, progressing cavity pumps for the anti-foaming agents and centrifugal pumps for the seal water.
