Slag grindingIn November 2012, Loesche won a contract from the German cement company Spenner Zement for the supply and construction of one complete slag grinding plant with the Loesche mill type LM 46.2+2. The plant will be built close to the steel plant of Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann (HKM) in Duisburg, Germany.

The contract includes the supply of the complete equipment from the slag conveying and dosing system to the inlet of the product bucket elevator, including the Loesche mill and Loesche hot gas generator, the product bag filter, as well as the process equipment
and technology. The electrical equipment and automation system will be delivered by Loesche Automation. Loesche is also responsible for the engineering, delivery and construction of the complete mill building, including all excavation and foundation works.

The throughput of the Loesche slag-grinding mill type LM 46.2+2 with its two masters and two support rollers amounts to more than 70t/h slag powder (dry-base), depending on the product fineness with up to 5,000 Blaine. The mill is driven by an electric motor with 2,800kW.

Loesche’s expertise and experience in the field of slag-grinding was, amongst other Loesche advantages, one of the decisive reasons for Spenner Zement to select Loesche’s proven vertical roller mill. Moreover, the Loesche mill is convincing in its reliability and its low maintenance. This has also convinced Spenner Zement while visiting several reference plants of wellknown cement companies in Europe.Furthermore, the Loesche cement and slaggrinding mill type LM 46.2+2 represents a proven model which is currently in operation 73 times worldwide.

The planned grinding plant is capable of handling more than 300,000 tons of slag per year. Spenner Zement transports 157,000
tons of cement powder each year from its own cement plant in Erwitte to the new plant in Duisburg. This cement is blended with the
slag powder to blast furnace cement. According to Spenner, the main market is the area around Duisburg.

With the engineering and construction of the complete slag-grinding plant on EPC basis in Duisburg, Loesche once more shows its
abilities and competence in the construction of integrated grinding plants. In addition to that, Loesche’s core competence in grinding
technology and corresponding components e.g. innovative grinding parts and alternative, energy-saving drive systems is constantly improved and further developed. In this instance, Loesche Automation represents an important key to combine state-of-the-art grinding technology with intelligent process control.

The commissioning of the plant is scheduled for the first quarter of 2014.
