Coal is the single biggest source of electricity accounting for one-third of global power generation. Global coal mining is forecast to reach 8,776.5 million tonnes (Mt) in 2025, according to GlobalData.
Mining Technology tracks the global coal market by analysing coal price trends and country-wise coal production, consumption, and export and import data. We also monitor the performance of coal mining companies and major coal mines around the world.
Mining Technology showcases the monthly coal prices and the global coal price trend over the last 12 months.
The thermal coal price rocketed to over US$400/t in early March.
After an already steep rise in January and February, linked to a ban on coal exports by Indonesia, the price of thermal coal hit US$440/t in early March as some countries looked to ban Russian coal. Russia is a major supplier of coal to parts of Europe, and the market is already tight with little to no surplus.
By the end of the month prices had dropped back down to US$259/t, still over four times higher than the average price in 2020.
Average Australian export hard coking coal prices were estimated to have risen by 13.7% in March.
Coking coal prices continued to rise in March, passing US$450/t. Like thermal coal, Russia is a key supplier of coking coal to Europe, although its share of the coking coal consumption in the region is around half its share of thermal coal demand.
