Anglo American Platinum has temporarily closed its Phase B unit of the Anglo Converter Plant (ACP) in Rustenburg after a water leak in the high-pressure cooling section of the plant.

The company noted that the temporary closure is to ensure an ongoing safe operating environment, safeguard employees as well as protect the plant’s integrity.

Anglo American said that the leak was detected on 31 May.

Currently, a detailed technical investigation into the cause of the leak and potential repairs are underway.

In a press statement, Anglo American said:  “This latest action is separate from the repair work that was recently completed at the ACP Phase B unit and there is no damage to the prior repairs or to the furnace.

“An update from the Company will be provided as soon as more information is available, expected to be early next week.”

Last month, Anglo American started a staged re-entry to the Grosvenor coal mine in Queensland after receiving approval from the state’s mines inspectorate.

The mine was closed in the prior week after an explosion injured five people that prompted an evacuation after which the company sent its 800 workers and contractors at the Bowen Basin mine home on full pay.

In the same month, the company confirmed that there are no cases of Covid-19 at its operations in in South Africa and Zimbabwe.
