Vedanta Resources subsidiary Vedanta Aluminum has unveiled plans to complete its smelting capacity expansion project by 2012-13.

The company has invested Rs600bn ($11.67bn) in the expansion project, which will involve setting up two captive power plants in Orissa, India.

Vedanta Aluminum managing director S K Roongta said the smelting capacity will be raised to 2.5Mtpa, from around 1.6Mtpa at present.

The company is part of a consortium of six firms that have been allocated a coal block with an estimated reserve of 645Mt, reports the PTI.
