Carroll Technologies Group aims to provide a personalised service for its customers, and customises the products and services it provides to suit specific mining operations. US-based building materials company Martin Marietta has benefited from Carroll’s tailored approach and here, JP Casey speaks to Martin Marietta electrical manager Frank Clark about the challenges he previously faced in securing products, and how Carroll has helped improve his operation.


A range of products with an emphasis on safety

Carroll has worked with Martin Marietta consistently for around two years, but Clark admits that there was initially some scepticism about the services the group could provide his company. Martin Marietta provides aggregates, asphalt, cement and ready-mixed concrete to building operations in 27 US states, Canada, the Bahamas and the Caribbean, products and territories beyond the traditional range of Carroll.

“In the beginning when Carroll came to us I didn’t think they could provide me much being the electrical manager,” said Clark. “But I soon realised they offer a lot more electrical products than what I thought.

“They supply me with Carlos Gavazzi Dupline modules and I now buy all of my cab hook products through Carroll, which my old supplier would take weeks to get but Carroll gets them delivered the next week in most cases.” The Dupline products replace communication networks that require several individual cables with two cables, which enable analogue and digital signals to be sent over distances of kilometers. Carroll also provides a range of wireless communications solutions, and has been able to provide Clark with a system that best fits his operation.

Clark continued: “Carroll also provides me with all my signs and safety stickers, as well as our W65 rescuers,” which produced by mining equipment provider the MSA Group and provides individual mine workers with air-purifying respirators to protect against poisonous gases such as carbon monoxide. The W65 is one of several personal safety devices distributed and managed by Carroll.

A holistic approach and growing customer base

Clark also said that he was impressed with the variety of products Carroll has provided, and that this range set the group apart from other service providers. “Martin Marietta is so big and has so many vendors where we have to go here for one thing, and there for another, but Carroll has proven to be a one-stop shop, which benefits us in our busy and non-stop industry,” he said.

In addition to providing materials to customers across several countries, Martin Marietta is listed on the S&P 500 Index, and has set up a subsidiary, Magnesia Specialties, which provides a range of magnesium-based products to customers. As the company has grown, Clark has continued to recommend Carroll to managers across Martin Marietta’s operations.

“After working with [Carroll sales account manager] Josh Johnson on items I need, I have already been introducing them to our plant managers to keep Carroll interested in doing business with us in the future. I will definitely use Carroll Engineering in the future as much as possible.”
