Canada’s Lundin Mining has received the environmental impact assessment (EIA) approval for its Candelaria copper mine located in Atacama, Chile.

The latest EIA approval will allow the company to extend operations and mine life for the Candelaria 2030 project.

In September 2013, Lundin submitted the EIA to the authorities to extend the mine.

Lundin Mining president and CEO Paul Conibear said: "We are very pleased to announce the receipt of the EIA approval at Candelaria.

"This announcement is the culmination of a comprehensive process."

As part of the Candelaria 2030 project, Lundin will make improvements to the existing operation in addition to constructing the new Los Diques tailings facility.

Following the approval, the company will immediately begin the early works infrastructure relocation programme for Los Diques.

Lundin also plans to advance normal course construction permitting for the major civil works.

After securing sectorial permits and relocation of portions of the road, power and other existing infrastructure is completed, the Los Diques dam civil works are expected to begin next year.

The company is also advancing an extension of the existing tailings storage facility to align with the commissioning of the tailing facility, which is expected to take place in 2018.

Lundin Mining has operations in Chile, Portugal, Sweden, Spain and the US.
