An explosion at a coal mine in south-western China’s Sichuan Province has claimed the lives of nine mining workers and injured 12 more.

The explosion took place at a time when the mine in Fulu Town, Leshan City was undergoing a safety overhaul, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Further, the news agency said that the blast occurred when the mining workers were working in the mine on the outskirts of Kunming, Yunnan Province.

Following the blast, the mine was filled with carbon monoxide and trapped 21 workers, according to an unnamed official.

"The explosion took place at a time when the mine in Fulu Town, Leshan City was undergoing a safety overhaul."

The blast killed two mining workers on the spot and another seven died while being rushed to hospital.

Recently, 16 miners died from a flooding incident that took place in Jiangjiawan coal mine, near the city of Datong in northern China.
