The granted patent US12006576B2 describes a novel plated steel sheet designed to enhance corrosion resistance and durability. The structure comprises a base steel sheet, a Zn—Mg—Al-based plating layer on at least one surface, and an Fe—Al-based inhibition layer situated between the base steel sheet and the plating layer. The plating layer is formulated with 4 to 10% magnesium (Mg) and 5.1 to 25% aluminum (Al), with the remainder being zinc (Zn) and unavoidable impurities. Notably, the plating layer contains a MgZn2 phase, which constitutes 24 to 50 weight percent of the layer, and an aluminum single phase that occupies 1 to 30% of the total cross-sectional area of the MgZn2 phase.

Further specifications include the exposure of the MgZn2 phase on the surface of the plating layer, with an average circle-equivalent diameter ranging from 5 to 50 micrometers. The aluminum single phase is also limited to 1 to 15% of the total area of the plating layer. The surface roughness of the plating layer is maintained between 0.5 to 2.0 micrometers. The inhibition layer is characterized as a Fe—Al-based intermetallic compound, containing less than 10 weight percent of zinc, with specific compounds such as Fe2Al5, FeAl3, and FeAl5 being identified. Additionally, the thickness of the inhibition layer is specified to be between 0.02 to 2 micrometers, contributing to the overall performance of the plated steel sheet.
